Former Iolani hoop star Low breaks foot

Associated Press

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State freshman point guard Derrick Low broke a bone in his right foot during practice and will undergo surgery, coach Dick Bennett said today.

Low, who starred at Iolani School and was one of the most sought-after recruits in Hawai'i history, was scheduled to have surgery tomorrow after breaking his foot during practice Sunday, Bennett said.

The 6-foot-1 guard could be out for six to eight weeks, WSU athletic officials said.

Low had been expected to take over for Marcus Moore in running the Cougars' offense. Moore graduated after last season.

Another freshman, 6-9 center Chris Henry from Santa Ana, Calif., dislocated his right ankle in a pickup game Oct. 12, Bennett said.

He is expected to be out four to six weeks, officials said.

Low and Henry are among six freshmen recruited by Bennett this season.

"It's an unfortunate start of the season," said Bennett, who directed the Cougars to a 13-16 record in his first season at WSU last year.

Low was a four-time Player of the Year in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and a three-time Player of the Year on The Advertiser's All-State team.

He led Iolani to three consecutive state titles and a runner-up finish his freshman year.
