"Luann" cartoonist Greg Evans returned to his San Diego home Sunday after a four-day vacation and found at least a dozen e-mails from people with Hawai'i ties who were tickled with his Thursday comic strip, which shows Luann's crush, Aaron Hill, announcing a move to Kailua.
"It's kind of that romantic location that would spark images in Luann's head of Aaron falling in love with an exotic Island girl," Evans joked by telephone from California.
Panel from Luann comic strip from Oct. 14, in which character Aaron Hill says hell be moving to Kailua.
Evans has vacationed in Hawai'i at least three times, and visited a friend in Kailua a few years ago. "I absolutely love the place," he said.
Aaron Hill has been the apple of Luann's eye since day one of the strip, Evans said. The syndicated comic strip, created in 1985, was inspired by Evans' then-preteen daughter.
The announcement of the Hawai'i move has left Luann crushed.
"He's really going," Evans said. "It's not going to turn out to be one of those dream sequences." He hasn't decided whether Kailua will figure in future "Luann" comic strips.
