A 79-year-old man and 75-year-old woman who were struck by a car Sunday night while crossing Farrington Highway in Kapolei are still hospitalized at The Queen's Medical Center, according to police traffic investigators.
Police said the couple were in a marked crosswalk shortly before 7 p.m. when they were hit by a car driven by a 20-year-old Wai'anae man, at the intersection of Farrington Highway and Papaiaulu Avenue between the Kapolei Knolls and Malanai subdivisions.
They were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and the woman's condition later became critical, police investigators said.
Vehicular homicide investigation supervisor Lt. Bennett Martin said police received conflicting statements from witnesses and the driver as to whether the car or pedestrians had the green light. The pedestrians were wearing dark clothing, Martin said.
The stretch of Farrington Highway where the collision occurred is a straightaway. Police did not say whether speed was a factor in Sunday night's accident.
