Mother driving car hits son, 2

Police yesterday were investigating an incident in which a 2-year-old boy was seriously injured after he was run over by a car driven by his mother on the North Shore.
The incident occurred about 11:30 a.m. Sunday in Waialua, police said. Police said the boy suffered multiple skull fractures after he was run over by his 23-year-old mother.
The boy was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, but his condition was not available yesterday. Police launched an investigation after being notified of the boy's injuries by a state social worker.
Sexual assault of state ward probed
Officials were investigating a report that a ward of the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility sexually assaulted another ward Oct. 7, state officials said.
Sharon Agnew, director of the Office of Youth Services, said the incident was reported to police but declined further comment.
Man charged in McCully brawl
A 22-year-old Liliha man was charged yesterday with second-degree attempted murder in connection with an Aug. 29 brawl in McCully.
Calvin Kam was arrested yesterday and charged with one count of attempted murder. He was being held last night on $75,000 bail.
Kam is accused of hitting another man on the head several times with an aluminum bat during a fight in the 2800 block of Kapi'olani Boulevard, police said. Police said the fight involved 12 to 15 men who were armed with bats, knives and electric stun guns.
In September, a 19-year-old Wai'anae man was charged with attempted murder in connection with that fight. Travis Demello was charged with stabbing a 19-year-old man.
Motorcyclist dies of crash injuries
A Big Island motorcyclist died Sunday of injuries he received during a collision in Hakalau.
Police said Wayne V. Ortiz, 53, of Papa'ikou was traveling south on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Hawai'i Belt Road near the Hakalau overpass when a Toyota van traveling north on the same road turned left onto Old Mamalahoa highway into the path of Ortiz.
Police said Katherine Akerberg, 64, of Kea'au was driving the van. After colliding with the van, Ortiz continued southbound on the highway until he struck a Suzuki multipurpose vehicle driven by Gregory Gauthier, 32, of Waikoloa.
Ortiz and Akerberg were taken to Hilo Medical Center, where Ortiz was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m. and Akerberg was treated and released. Gauthier was not injured.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call police officer Norbert Serrao at 961-2332.
Hilo man charged in sexual assault
HILO, Hawai'i Police detectives have charged a 49-year-old Hilo man after an underage girl told police she was sexually assaulted early Saturday as she slept at the home of a relative in the Hilo area.
Herbert T. Daligdig was charged on one count of first-degree sexual assault, and was being held in the police cellblock in lieu of $150,000 bail.

Arrest made in credit-card case
A 35-year-old woman who allegedly tried to use a stolen credit card to buy items at the new Wal-Mart store on Ke'eaumoku Street was arrested on suspicion of various felonies Sunday.
Police said the woman tried to use the card at a self-checkout counter at about 3:30 p.m., but the card had been reported stolen and was rejected.
The woman was arrested on suspicion of fraudulent use of a credit card and forgery, theft and identity theft.
Charges against the woman were pending yesterday morning.
Man suspected in two assaults
Police on Sunday arrested a 42-year-old Kailua man as a suspect in two cases involving two other Kailua men during the past week.
A 35-year-old man told police the older man hit him with a pool stick during an argument Oct. 10 in a parking lot on Hoolai Street and that he had to be taken to Castle Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.
Police said they believe the same man threatened to kill a 45-year-old man Wednesday on Kailua Beach.
In both incidents, the suspect left before police arrived, but they found him Sunday and arrested him for suspicion of second-degree assault and first-degree terroristic threatening.
