Alleged car thief asleep at wheel

A 24-year-old man was arrested in Salt Lake today on suspicion of car theft.

A police officer on routine patrol duty reported finding the man sleeping behind the steering wheel of a car that had stopped at the intersection of Ala Ilima and Ala Lilikoi streets. The car's motor was still running and the gear selector was in drive when the officer went to check on the driver.

A check showed the car had been reported stolen and the driver was arrested.

Boy is arrested in assault on teacher

A 14-year-old boy was arrested yesterday after allegedly punching a teacher at Pu'uhale Elementary School.

Police said the boy was upset and broke a window about 3 p.m., then punched the teacher, 28, in the right eye.

Police arrested the boy at Pu'uhale Road and Homerule Street on suspicion of assault and criminal property damage.

He was released without charges pending further investigation.

Man wanted by police turns himself in

Richard K. Pauline, who was wanted by police for probation revocation and contempt warrants, turned himself in at 3 a.m Sunday, police said.

Pauline was convicted of felony terroristic threatening after he brandished a knife while stealing items from a boat at Wai'anae Boat Harbor in July 2002.

Police last week asked for the public's help in finding Pauline, 34, who was said to be living in the viaduct area near the airport. Investigators wanted to question Pauline about a series of burglaries, one of which took place in September on Peltier Avenue in Pearl Harbor.

No new charges had been brought against Pauline as of this morning.
