Washington State freshman Derrick Low, a projected starter who broke a bone in his right foot during practice Sunday and will undergo surgery today, said his injury is "a minor setback."
Low said it's a "same-day" procedure and expects to be out of action for five or six weeks.
"It's OK, I'm gonna be fine," Low said. "(Assistant coach) Tony Bennett said it's actually better that it happened now, because this kind of injury usually means there already was a stress fracture, which I didn't even know I had. If it happened later, it could have been worse."
Low said he suffered the injury when he jumped to contest a shot and landed on another player's foot at the end of Sunday's practice the Cougars' second of the season.
"It's the bone below the knuckle on the baby toe," said Low's father, Ken. "It's a small, 2-inch surgery where they insert a pin."
Low was a four-time Player of the Year in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and a three-time Advertiser State Player of the Year. He led Iolani to three straight state titles after a runner-up finish his freshman year.
Low had been expected to take over as Washington State's starting point guard. He said he will be fitted with a special boot and will be on crutches for two weeks, then hopes to begin jogging and running.
"By the sixth or seventh week, I should be ready to play," Low said. "It's just a minor setback."
