Learn tricks of the trade from veteran designer of digital sets

Learn the secrets of digital sets, and how they affect storytelling in film, from one who's done it. Eric Hanson, a visual effects designer who has worked at Digital Domain, Sony Imageworks, Disney Feature Animation and Dream Quest Images, will speak on "The Rise and Challenge of Digital Sets," at 7:30 p.m. today at the Architecture Auditorium, University of Hawai'i-Manoa.

You've seen his work, including the digital sets of Manhattan and Los Angeles in "The Day After Tomorrow," above.

His talk, part of the New Arts Lecture series, is free and open to the public.


Take a peek at 'Dear George' letters

Manoa Valley Theatre will join more than two-dozen theaters in a nationwide staged reading of "Dear George: Letters to the President," at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the theater. If there is a demand, a third performance will be added at 4 p.m. Sunday.

It is a compilation of Americans' open letters written to President Bush during this election year, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. MVT producing director Dwight T. Martin will direct, with James Aina, Karen Bumatai, Greg Howell and Tara Ziegler participating. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for MVT 2004-2005 season subscribers, seniors, military and patrons 25 and younger. Information: 988-6131.
