Mufi Hannemann for mayor it is his time
During the primary election, this newspaper endorsed mayoral candidate Mufi Hannemann over a long and relatively distinguished list of candidates.
That endorsement remains solid for the general election.
By any measure, Hannemann is ready to be mayor of Honolulu. He has experience at the local, state and national levels that will serve him well as Honolulu's chief executive. And he understands the complexities of the job.
We said during the primary that Hannemann's major opponent, Duke Bainum, would serve the city well if elected. That continues to hold true.
But the balance tilts decisively to Hannemann. He has demonstrated over the years that he has the ability to work with many constituencies, ranging from unions and public workers through the business community.
This will serve Hannemann well as the city's chief executive. Honolulu's future depends on the entire community working toward common goals. Hannemann has shown he is someone who can achieve that consensus.
And while Hannemann is a coalition builder, he is far from being the kind of politician who simply runs in the direction of the majority.
On many occasions he has stood his ground against the majority, even when so doing cost him politically.
Mufi Hannemann is articulate, experienced and passionate about his birthplace and the welfare of those who live here.
He will make a good mayor and he deserves your vote.
