Two top educators deserve our thanks

Good teachers can make a tremendous difference in our schools. They do just that every day.

They're on the frontlines in implementing education reform. And they're there for our kids, often working long hours and spending chunks of their hard-earned cash for extra supplies.

This week, two exceptional teachers received national recognition for a job well done. Moanalua Elementary School's Katherine Nakamura and Kalaheo Elementary third grade teacher Clyde Hashimoto received the Milken Family Foundation National Education Award, which honors the country's best educators.

Only 100 teachers are selected nationwide for this honor.

Nakamura is known for her ability to motivate her class and for her work in bringing innovative programs to her campus. She is also the author of an award-winning children's book.

Hashimoto is known for turning the most troubled student into a successful one. He inspires students both in the classroom and outside.

Nakamura and Hashimoto deserve our kudos, and our thanks, for making a positive difference in our schools and for having a positive impact on our kids.
