Motorcyclist still critical after crash

A motorcyclist remained in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center this morning with injuries he received after colliding with a pickup truck on Kamehameha Highway last night near the entrance to the Arizona Memorial.

Police traffic investigators said the motorcycle operator, 34, of Honolulu was traveling toward the airport when his 1982 Yamaha stuck the left rear side of a 1996 Toyota pickup truck headed in the same direction. A 23-year-old Navy man was driving the truck, police said

The motorcycle fell on its side and slid along the pavement, igniting a fire, investigators said. They said the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered head and internal injuries as well as severe burns. He was taken to Queen's in serious condition, but his condition later worsened to critical, investigators said.

The pickup truck driver was not injured. Police believe the motorcyclist was speeding just prior to the crash.

Tree falls; 300 lose electricity

Approximately 300 customers were left without electricity last night and this morning after a large tree fell across power lines leading to the Kapoho Vacation Land and Beachlots subdivisions on the Big Island.

The outage began just after 10 p.m. when the tree fell on the lines near the five-mile marker on the Kapoho-Pahoa Road.

Hawaii Electric Light Co. crews this morning completed work on about a mile of line and at 7:55 a.m., restored service.
