Salonga sings

Lea Salonga offers three concerts on two islands beginning Monday.
Songbird Lea Salonga, best known for her Broadway role as Kim in the blockbuster musical "Miss Saigon," offers a trio of concerts — one on Maui and two in Honolulu — next week. Salonga also has starred in "Flower Drum Song" and "Les Miserables" and is heard in the Disney animated hit films "Aladdin" and "Mulan."

The nation speaks

As Election Day nears, Manoa Valley Theatre joins more than two dozen theaters in a national staging of "Dear George: Letters to the President." This nonpartisan performance piece features open letters written this year by Americans to President Bush from Memorial Day to Labor Day. James Aina, Karen Bumatai, Greg Howell and Tara Ziegler appear. Dwight T. Martin directs.

A marathon of punk music

Linus is one of several bands taking part in a marathon of punk at Anna's.
Twelve hours, 15 bands and nonstop jams is what it'll be all about at Anna's this weekend at the Punk Rock Marathon. The first part of the half-day concert is open to all ages, for a positive music event that all can enjoy. After 8:30 p.m., it's only for those 18 and older to rock on until the wee hours of the morning. Bands prepared to punk out include Linus, Black Square, Extra Stout, The Miltons, Hell Caminos, Filthy Degenerates, **** Poor Excuse, Mister Meaner, Space Catalog, El Enemigo, Les Sauvage, The Ex Superheroes, Vax, Temporary Lovers and Upstanding Youth. A portion of the proceeds benefits Unity Crayons.

Jam again at Kapono's

Bluegrass Hawai'i's next Twang Jam features the talents of blind concert pianist Chris Cerna, above, on mandolin. The Chris Cerna Quintet headlines the monthly concert, with additional jamming provided by the Wild Orchids String Band and Appalachian Clogging with Jane Fyrberg and friends. Offstage, toes keep tapping during the CD swap and community jam after the concert. Maggie Brown's Trad Jam provides a demonstration, and jamming tips and techniques for beginners will also be a feature. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.

Once upon a time ...

In a land not so far away, La Pietra presents its annual Children's Fair at the foot of the magical Diamond Head. Themed "Storybook Land," come find your happily ever after with activities geared toward children 2 to 12, such as pony rides, miniature golf and an obstacle course. Get creative with interactive arts and crafts such as making a royal cape and crown, painting a self-portrait or face painting. Free parking and free shuttle service will be available at Kapi'olani Community College.

Dogs have another day

People and pooches are invited out to a day for dogs at the Hawaiian Humane Society's K-9 Game Day. You're in for an arfful lot of fun with games such as musical hula hoops, obstacle courses and land retrieve. A pet costume contest gets under way at 11 a.m., with a hot dog-bobbing contest following at 11:30 a.m. A doggie salon will be set up for pampered pets to get massaged, groomed or have their nails done. For a $20 donation, get a family photo taken at Pictures with Santa Paws. John Mathews of Oldies 107.9 emcees. Parking is available at the Blaisdell for a $4 flat fee.


The music of India

Let your ears take an exotic journey during "An Indian Musical Odyssey," featuring six musicians from southern India. Led by drummer Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman, Nemani Somayajulu, Nagai Sriram, E.M. Subramanian, Mattanur Sankarankutty and Unnikrishnan (above) perform on Indian tuned drums, clay pots, porcelain bowls and violin for a captivating, melodious ride. Taiko master Kenny Endo appears as guest artist.

Words and music

Local singer/songwriters Jeff K. and Jim Hubbard bring their original compositions downtown for TrueTone Songwriter's Night. Jeff K. (Kloetzel) will offer acoustic versions from his catalog, which ranges from modern tunes to timeless ballads. Hubbard, a University of Hawai'i guitar major who has several CDs to his credit, specializes in modern folk/rock/blues/pop.

Sights and sounds of China

Sample the sights, sounds and sustenance of China at the 2nd annual Taste of China this weekend. Cultural entertainment comes in the form of Chinese folk dances, singing, martial arts and kung fu demonstrations and dragon dancing. An opening ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday features lion dances and the 55th Narcissus Queen and her court. Get a real taste of China with the abundant food booths and ethnic cuisine available. Interactive keiki activities feature a small Chinese lion head and Chinese musical instruments. A mini fashion show, cultural displays, Chinese painting and calligraphy, and arts and crafts round out the offerings. Proceeds benefit the Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
