Advertiser Staff and News Services

The youngsters call it "speed dating." The 40-and-over set calls it "discussion circles."

If you're 40-plus and you want to try a new dating format, check out First Unitarian Church (2500 Pali Highway) from 6:45 to 9:30 tonight for what's being billed as "intelligent and fun discussion circles for six." Circles rotate several times during the evening. A $10 donation at the door includes light refreshments.

Free mammograms offered

Sue Hook

Sue Hook was standing in line at Foodland when she saw a flier about getting a free mammogram. She was unemployed and couldn't really afford one, and it had been a while since her last screening for breast cancer. Today, the 'Aiea woman credits the state's Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program for saving her life. It found that she had cancer.

The program offers free screenings at Kapi'olani Breast Center for Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islander and Filipino women, ages 50 to 64, who meet insurance and financial criteria, as well as for women 40 and older who have a family history or current symptoms of breast or cervical cancer. "Had it not been for them, you know how you put it off? I probably would have gone another year," Hook said. "I'm so thankful for them." For information, call 973-3015.
