As his reign as 2004 Teacher of the Year came to an end yesterday, Robert Hu, a social-studies teacher from Mililani High School, was named one of five recipients of the Horace Mann-National Education Association Foundation Awards for Teaching Excellence, an honor that carries a $10,000 cash prize and a trip to Washington, D.C., for the foundation's annual gala.
At the December gala, one of the five finalists will win the NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence, which comes with a $25,000 cash prize and personalized commemorative gift.
Hu is a 33-year teaching veteran who applies an interactive and service-minded teaching style to his American civics and ethnic studies courses. For 27 years, students have participated in his Ohana Project, which requires them to do community service, such as sponsoring a Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless or campaigning to save an ocean reef.
Hu was nominated by the Hawai'i State Teachers Association.
