Body in 'Ewa fire identified

The Honolulu medical examiner's office positively identified one of the two people found dead in Tuesday's house fire in 'Ewa as 56-year-old Brenda Mathias.

Family and friends believe the second person is Mathias' longtime boyfriend, Lino Viavao, 55.

Mathias was executive director of the community health center Kokua Kalihi Valley.

Arson is suspected, and investigators were trying to determine who set the blaze.

The fire on Ho'opi'o Street was set in several places, according to investigators who found two empty fuel canisters at the scene. Mathias is survived by four children, while Viavao had three.



Fishermen died by drowning

Two fisherman whose bodies were found floating off Kewalo Basin last Friday morning drowned, according to the city medical examiner's office.

Police and fire officials said they believe Roy Okamoto, 54, and Mark Cameron, 44, were tossed into the ocean after Okamoto's 13-foot boat capsized.



Kalani High hosts fund-raiser

Kalani High School is hosting its Project Graduation 2005 Outback Steakhouse fund-raiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Students will provide entertainment, and there will be a silent auction and bake sale. Proceeds will go to pay for an organized graduation party, an alcohol-free evening run by parents. Cost is $20. Call 377-7744.



Police seek help finding man, 35

Police are asking for the public's help in locating Gilbert Caravallo. Investigators are looking for anyone who had contact with Caravallo after 3 p.m. Oct. 6 in Pearl City.

Caravallo, 35, is 6 feet 1, 225 pounds and has black hair, brown eyes, a mustache and a goatee. The word "Gilbert" is tattooed on his back, and a tattoo on his upper right arm carries the word "Wizard."

Second fire burns Koko Head area

Fire yesterday afternoon scorched a remote two-acre site on Koko Head near an area that burned on Thursday, fire officials said.

The fire was contained within two hours and required three companies and use of the department's helicopter, said Fire Capt. Emmit Kane. Firefighters used the helicopter to drop water on the fire.



Plight of turtle topic of talk

A presentation on the plight of the leatherback turtle is set for 7-8:30 p.m. tomorrow at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. It is free and open to the public.

Dr. Frank Paladino will speak on "Twenty-five Years of Marine Turtle Conservation in the Pacific: What Have We Learned and Accomplished?" For the past 15 years, he and his colleagues have spearheaded leatherback research resulting in findings that are critical to saving this highly endangered species.

The leatherback, the largest marine turtle, has declined in population by nearly two-thirds during the past 20 years.



BOE candidates at AAUW forum

O'ahu Board of Education candidates will participate in a forum Wednesday at the American Association of University Women at 1802 Ke'eaumoku St.

All candidates will be asked to respond to prepared questions, then will take questions from the audience.

The forum is sponsored by AAUW, the League of Women Voters and the Parent, Teacher, Student Association.

The forum is from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.



'Olelo debate on House Dist. 33

Tonight's live one-hour political debate on 'Olelo Community Television's Channel 54 at 6:30 p.m. will feature the candidates to represent House District 33, Republican challenger Gerald Coffee and Democratic incumbent Blake Oshiro.

On Monday, the 'Olelo debate will feature the three candidates for U.S. Congress, District 1.
