OUR NEIGHBORHOOD ATHLETES
Youths hit surf at Kekai Grom Fest

Advertiser Staff

Surfing in conditions sometimes twice their height, more than 160 youngsters ages 4 to 12 competed in the second annual Surflife Rabbit Kekai Grom Fest in Waikiki on Sept. 27.

Wave faces were in the 6- to 8-foot range and the standouts were Vincent Starn, who won the 4- to 6-year-old division, and the Moniz family, which won three divisions. Josh Moniz won the 7-8 age group, Isiah won the 9-10 and Kelia, the only girl to finish first, won the 11-12. The trio's father, Tony Moniz, is a former professional surfer and the founder of Faith Riding Company.

"They surf six to seven days out here (in Waikiki) and love it," Tony said.

The event benefits the newly formed Rabbit Kekai Foundation, which provides for needy kids. This year the event teamed up with Hawaiian language immersion school Ke Kula Kaipuni 'O Anuenue. Students read their Hawaiian essays about surfing to the crowd and for their efforts got a trophy and surfboard.
