Over the past month in the battle between mayoral candidates, Duke Bainum loaned his campaign another $320,000 while Mufi Hannemann made a $75,000 loan to his campaign coffers, according to campaign finance reports filed yesterday.

Largely on the strength of his own personal wealth, Bainum continues to raise more and spend more. The report shows in the past month, he outspent Hannemann by $120,000.

Since the mayoral campaign began in January 2000, former City Council member Bainum has loaned his campaign $2,296,000 and repaid none of it, the report said. Well-to-do relatives and supporters on the Mainland have also contributed heavily to the Bainum campaign.

"I'm fortunate and grateful to have a wide range of support, including strong grassroots support," Bainum said in a written statement yesterday. "I'm also extremely proud of my parents, who started with nothing and built a successful business, which gave me the opportunity to be able to self-finance a portion of my campaign."

The Hannemann campaign reported raising $381,000 over the past month, including a $75,000 loan from Hannemann, also a former City Council member. But during the same period, the Hannemann campaign reported paying back an earlier $90,000 loan from Hannemann.

"Mufi has loaned the campaign money because it is expensive, and we have an opponent who has a lot of resources," said Elisa Yadao of the Hannemann campaign.

"We're committed to running the race we need to run to win," Yadao said.

Bainum reported raising $435,000 and spending $387,000 from Sept. 19 through Oct. 18. Since the election period began nearly four years ago, the Bainum camp has raised $3,582,000 and spent $3,462,000, according to campaign spending reports.

Bainum said that his ability to draw on his personal and family financial resources frees his campaign from outside interests. "This campaign is, and has always been, about positive change, independence and serving the people's interest rather than the special interests," he said.

Over the entire election, the Hannemann campaign has raised $1.97 million and spent $1.76 million, yesterday's report said.

"We're going to make up for what we don't have in money with sweat equity," Yadao said.

With two weeks remaining before the general election, the Hannemann camp reported $147,671 remaining in its warchest. Cash reserves for the Bainum campaign were down to $48,798.
