Iolani routs Pac-Five, moves to 7-1

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Running back Michael Hirokawa rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 5 Iolani over Pac-Five, 44-20, last night in Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II football at Aloha Stadium.

The Raiders (7-1 overall, 4-1 ILH) clinched the league's division II berth in the state tournament with Damien's loss at Kamehameha.

If Iolani wins its remaining two games, it will have at least an equal record to the Division I's best team. A playoff would be played to determine the overall ILH championship. But even if the Raiders win the overall title, they would still play in the Division II state tournament, because that is what it had declared prior to the season.

Hirokawa had TD runs of 1, 53 and 34 yards for the Raiders, who were without the league's leading quarterback, Kiran Kepo'o. Kepo'o did not suit up, and had his right ankle wrapped because of a sprain he sustained in last week's upset of Saint Louis. Iolani coach Wendell Look said he rested Kepo'o as a precaution, but added "if this was for the championship, he would've played."

His backup, Kai Iwasaki, completed 7 of 15 passes for 79 yards, including TD passes of 13 yards to Travis Nishioka and 11 yards to Micah Kalama.

Pac-Five's usual starting quarterback, Bryson Beirne, did not start, but entered the game later. He was not allowed to start because he had missed practice during the week with a knee sprain, coach Kip Botelho said. Beirne was 6 of 17 for 140 yards.

The Wolfpack's Brashton Satele had 151 yards on eight carries, including TD runs of 71 and 10 yards. He also had an assist on a third TD, when he broke loose for a 39-yard run. He fumbled, but receiver Cody Walker picked up the ball and ran the last 12 yards for the score.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Raiders scored 30 points in the second quarter. The 35-point differential mercy rule running clock went into effect when Iolani went up 36-0 with 5:12 left in the third quarter.

SAINT LOUIS 42, PUNAHOU 0

Backup quarterback Cameron Higgins passed for three touchdowns and 159 yards for the fourth-ranked Crusaders (6-2, 4-1) in an ILH Division I game at Aloha Stadium.

Higgins started in place of Stanley Nihipali, who was out with a right shoulder (throwing side) injury that was aggravated in last week's Iolani game. Saint Louis offensive coordinator Vince Passas said Nihipali injured the shoulder in a nonleague game against Kapolei more than a month ago.

"He (Higgins) was adequate," Passas said. "He prepared all week for this. He studied film. He did his homework."

Passas said the Crusaders tried to ease Higgins into the game by using the run. Kevin Sullivan rushed for 93 yards on 16 carries, including a 16-yard TD.

Receiver Aaron Bain had two carries for 62 yards, while Shaun Kauleinamoku scored on a 9-yard end-around run.

Higgins was 10 of 17 for 159 yards with one interception.

All of Higgins' TD passes were to Shane Perry, who entered the game with four on the season (including non-league games).
