Fresno State shuts down Rainbow Wahine in WAC soccer

Fresno State defeated the University of Hawai'i soccer team, 2-0, yesterday at Fresno, Calif., handing the Rainbow Wahine their third consecutive road loss.

Hawai'i is 11-5-2 overall and 4-3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Fresno State is 5-7-2 and 2-2-2.

Fresno State's Andrea Alires scored a little more than 10 minutes into the first half, and Antonea Lugo added an insurance goal at 65:21 in the second half.

Natasha Kai managed three shots, while Sasha Araya-Schraner had two for the Rainbow Wahine.

UH closes its WAC regular season tomorrow at San Jose State and plays a nonconference match Tuesday at San Francisco.



VOLLEYBALL

BYU-Hawai'i sweeps past Hawai'i-Hilo

Lilly Tufuga had 15 kills and Yu Chuan Weng added 12 to lift Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a

30-20, 30-18, 30-27 Pacific West Conference women's volleyball victory over Hawai'i-Hilo last night at the Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

BYUH is 9-10 overall 2-7 in the PacWest. UH-Hilo is 4-13 and 1-6.

Lindsay Williams led UH-Hilo with 10 kills.



AIR RIFLERY

Chargers, Hurricanes capture OIA titles

Pearl City's boys and Kapolei's girls won O'ahu Interscholastic Association air riflery championships yesterday at the Hurricanes' campus.

Pearl City edged Leilehua in the final, 1,645 points to 1,632 and Kapolei defeated the Charger girls, 1,712-1,669.

Pearl City's Andrew Itsuno claimed the boys' individual championship and Waipahu's Laura Perreira won the top honor for the girls.



PADDLING

Hilo World Sprints on TV next week

The Hilo World Sprints international paddling competition held in Hilo in August will be featured on the national TV series "Pacific Expeditions — The HAWAII Show" on the Outdoor Life Network Tuesday through Thursday.

The 23-minute show will air in Hawai'i at: 1 a.m. Tuesday, 1 a.m. Wednesday and 4 a.m. Thursday.

BYU-Hawai'i remains 13th in coaches' poll

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's water polo team remained 13th in the Collegiate Coaches Water Polo Poll released yesterday.

BYUH (10-2) routed Chaminade, 21-6, last week and travels to play UC Davis on Thursday The Aggies are tied with the Seasiders for 13th in the poll.

UCLA remained atop the poll, Stanford, USC, UC Santa Barbara and California round out the top five.



TRIATHLON

Honolulu World Cup to debut next year

Olympic-caliber triathletes will return to Hawai'i next April for the JAL Honolulu World Cup.

Last April, the United States Olympic Team Trials Triathlon was staged in Honolulu. Because of its success, the International Triathlon Union agreed to create the inaugural JAL Honolulu World Cup.

The race course for the Honolulu World Cup will be similar to the course used for the Olympic Team Trials — 1-mile swim off Waikiki Beach, followed by a 24.8-mile bike (five laps around Diamond Head), and then a 6.2-mile run along the streets of Waikiki.

The Honolulu World Cup is scheduled for April 16, and is expected to draw several of the world's top professional triathletes.

There will also be a JAL Honolulu Triathlon on April 17. That race will be for amateur triathletes.

ILH meet canceled

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu meet scheduled for today at Ho'omaluhia has been canceled because of wet grounds.
