Walk for Hunger benefit Saturday

Teams are needed to take part in The River of Life Mission's second annual Walk for Hunger, set for 8 a.m. Saturday at Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park.

The two-mile walk is a fund-raiser for the mission's free meal program and social services. Groups are needed to walk and to collect pledges.

Entertainment that morning will feature Sam Kapu Jr., Kaukahi, and David Kahiapo. Snacks and refreshments will be served after the walk.

The mission would like to have 1,000 people at the walk to help raise $200,000.

Lacy Veach Day at Punahou

Students in grades four through 12 are invited to attend the third annual Astronaut Lacy Veach Day of Discovery, a free educational program that provides science and technology workshops and displays.

The event, which pays tribute to Veach, a Punahou graduate and veteran of two space shuttle flights, will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Punahou School.

Applications are available by calling the Hawai'i Space Grant Consortium office at 956-3138 or through www.spacegrant.hawaii.edu/Day-of-discovery. Registration is required.



Applications due for Christmas aid

The Salvation Army will accept applications from Tuesday to Nov. 24 from families who need assistance in providing their children with gifts this holiday season.

Applications may be obtained at the following Salvation Army locations weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.:

• Kauluwela Mission Corps, 296 North Vineyard Blvd., 521-6551.

• Kane'ohe Corps, 45-175 Waikalua Road, 235-1408.

• Leeward Corps, 98-612 Moanalua Loop, 487-1636.

Applicants must have photo identification for themselves and their children to verify their age, as well as verification of income and proof of address.



$1,000 donation to Food Bank

HILO, Hawai'i — The Hawai'i Island Food Bank has received a $1,000 donation from Hawaiian Tug & Barge/Young Brothers Ltd. to help pay for the Senior Brown Bag program.

The food bank delivers surplus food and nonfood items to 1,200 senior citizens. The Brown Bag program is meant to supplement the diets of seniors who don't always have ready access to grocery stores or pantries due to lack of transportation or money.

The Hawai'i Island Food Bank is a program of the Office for Social Ministry of the Dioceses of Honolulu.



Hawai'i Kai board to meet

The Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board will hear presentations on the East Honolulu Sustainable Communities Plan, Hawai'i Clean Elections and an update on the Koko Villas townhome development at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Haha'ione Elementary School cafeteria.

Broadcasts of the Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board meetings are generally at midnight Sundays on 'Olelo Channel 54. Check television listing guides for details.



Poetry contest entries accepted

Entries are being accepted from students in grades three to 12 for the Star Poets 2005 competition.

The contest is sponsored by Windward Community College and Starbucks Coffee.

The first-place prize is $50 for the student and $250 for the school; second is $35 for the student and $175 for the school; and third is $25 for the student and $125 for the school.

Entry forms are available at all Starbucks stores on O'ahu, Maui, Kaua'i and the Big Island, as well as at www.starbuckshawaii.com under company information and at www.wcc.hawaii.edu.

The deadline for submissions is Jan. 15. Entries can be mailed to Starbucks Star Poets Contest; 1240 Ala Moana Blvd., Suite 240, Honolulu, HI, 96814.



Army to buy school supplies

The Army School Partnership Program will purchase almost $4,000 in supplies and materials to complete the repairs and maintenance of Waialua High and Intermediate Schools' aquaculture facilities.

Waialua is partnered with the 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment of the 25th Infantry Division (Light) at Schofield Barracks.



Kahului Library to shorten hours

Kahului Public Library will shorten its public service hours effective Tuesday because of a faulty central air-conditioning system. The library will be open only during the cooler hours of the day until air-conditioner replacement parts from the Mainland are received and installed.

Following are Kahului Library's temporary hours: Tuesday, 4 to 8 p.m.; and Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon. While the library will be closed on Saturdays, customers may visit nearby Wailuku Public Library from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
