McLachlin moves on in Q-School with tie for second

Hawai'i's Parker McLachlin took another step closer to the PGA Tour when he finished tied for second yesterday at the Q-School First Stage Qualifying Tournament at Dayton Valley, Nev.

McLachlin, a Punahou School and UCLA alum, shot a final-round 3-under 69 for a 72-hole total of 278 at the Dayton Valley Golf Club. He was tied with Chris Kamin (71) of Phoenix, two shots behind medalist Wil C. Collins (65-276) of Rapid City, S.D.

The top 23 scorers and ties advanced to the second stage tournaments — Nov. 10 to 13 or Nov. 17-20 at six sites.

The top qualifiers from the second stage will play in the Q-School 108-hole final at the PGA West Stadium Course in La Quinta, Calif.

Lehman ties Baird atop Disney Classic

Tom Lehman made two eagles yesterday for a 5-under 67 that left him tied for the lead with Briny Baird in the Funai Classic at Disney at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Lehman, who made a 15-foot eagle putt at the par-5 fourth and holed out from 88 yards on the par-4 13th, missed a 5-foot birdie putt on the final hole to finish at 17-under 199.

Baird, winless in 153 starts on the PGA Tour, missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 68.

Kite maintains 2-shot lead in Schwab Cup

Tom Kite shot an even-par 72 to take a two-stroke lead over Jose Maria Canizares in a misty drizzle during the third round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Sonoma, Calif.

Kite, at 10-under 206 in the Champions Tour's $2.5 million season-ending event.
