BYUH sweeps PacWest run

Advertiser Staff

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's men and women swept individual and team honors of the Pacific West Conference Cross Country Championships yesterday at Billings, Mont.

Jeremy Van Tress completed the 8-kilometer course in 26 minutes, 5 seconds to edge teammate Jacob Rushton by three seconds. Chaminade's Bedora Lim was third, a second behind Rushton.

"This course was very fast," Van Tress said. "I knew it would be quick, so I hung back ... and ran conservatively for the first mile."

The Seasiders scored a low-best 33 points to beat Hawai'i-Hilo by 11 points. Hawai'i Pacific was third with 86. Chaminade placed fifth with 113.

BYUH's Chelsea Smith easily won the women's 5K race in 16:57. Montana State-Billings' Heidi Robertson finished second in 19:00.

"I didn't feel that fast," Smith said. "(Running without anyone close) is hard mentally, but I have an awesome team. Our men's team is always out there yelling and pushing me."

The Seasiders scored 34 points to edge Montana State-Billings (42). Hawai'i-Hilo (110) was fourth, Chaminade (111) fifth and Hawai'i Pacific (133) sixth.
