Racquetball, weights keep him fit

Manny Rezentes celebrated his 65th birthday by bench-pressing 230 pounds 20 times. Twenty years ago, his doctors would not have thought this possible. In 1981, as a police officer, he went through a plate-glass window in pursuit of a suspect. His recovery is legendary, as are his energy and determination to keep fit.
Age: 65.
Profession: Retired police lieutenant; security coordinator for the University of Hawai'i football team.
Height: 5-feet-9.
Weight: 220 pounds.
Workout habits: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Rezentes plays racquetball for two hours (singles and doubles); Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays he does weight training and uses the treadmill for cardio.
When and why I started working out: "I have always worked out — all my life since high school. Later, I played basketball with the Armed Forces League Mutual Express Panthers team, and I played football for a semi-pro team, the Tantalus Rangers."
My good foods/bad foods: "I eat chicken, fish and meat throughout the week. I love veggies — they're always on the plate before I eat anything else. I eat fruits in between as snacks. I treat myself once in awhile to TCBY yogurt or some macadamia-nut chocolates."
My biggest motivator: "Even if I'm exhausted to begin with, I feel better after I work out. ... I think people should join a fitness center so you have the camaraderie. The YMCA does a great job."
What saves my sanity: "Working out. Hey, I'm too tired to get depressed."
My next challenge: "I'm into weight-lifting — not to be bigger, but to be more sculptured."
Advice for those in the same boat: "Never stop. Just keep going, even when you feel lousy. OK, so you work out lousy. But just do something."
