The first Hawai'i-based Marine has died supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Lance Cpl. Richard P. Slocum, 19, of Saugus, Calif., was killed in a non-combat related vehicle accident in Iraq, the Department of Defense said today.

Slocum died Sunday near Abu Ghraib in Iraq.

The accident is being investigated.

Slocum was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment based at Marine Corps Base, Hawai'i in Kane'ohe. His unit was deployed to Okinawa in July then was sent to Iraq for a seven month stint, said Gunnery Sgt. Claudia LaMantia, a spokeswoman for the Kane'ohe base.

Slocum was not married. He joined the Marines in August 2003 and was trained as a machine gunner, LaMantia said.
