For late-night grinds, beckoning eateries abound

 •  Where to go when the munchies strike in the night

That afternoon coffee was a bad idea. You lie in bed with caffeine tremors, unable to sleep. The clock ticks loudly. The sheep are getting stuck in the fence. And worst of all, you're hungry.

Brightly lit Sanoya Rahmen on South King Street is open until 3 a.m. each day to appease the appetites of noodle-craving nightcrawlers.

Where will you eat at such an ungodly hour?

Fear not! There are places you can go. We went out to find people from various walks of life who could tell us where to find the best late-night grinds.

Tunes, chow at Shinsho Tei

Entertainer Robert Cazimero's life is music, and it seeps into every part of his life — even his food.

After finishing his evening gig at Chai's Island Bistro, you can often find him at Shinsho Tei, a karaoke bar off Nu'uanu Avenue that's open till 2 a.m.

"I'm not a real drinker," Cazimero said. "I just like to go there because of the music. There are a lot of great singers there."

Not to mention the food. Shinsho Tei has a variety of pupu to fill that late-night craving perfectly. You'll often find Cazimero with karaoke mike in one hand and pupu in the other — at least when he's not eating the "killer" tempura or the Spam omelette.

"The pupus there, you can just throw them on my thighs," he said.

Bonding at Liliha Bakery

After three hours of evening rehearsal for the play "Big River" at Windward Community College, actor John Bryan's favorite late-night diner is Liliha Bakery — open 24 hours Tuesdays through Saturdays. He's been going there after play rehearsals for almost three years.

It may be late when he gets there, but he's not even close to being tired of it. His usual order: pancakes and a cheese omelette.

"I always go there. I'm really into the late-night breakfast," he says. "The pancakes there are the best on the planet. The pancakes are exactly the right consistency."

Liliha Bakery is just what Bryan needs to wind down after grueling rehearsals. It's the perfect place to bond with other cast members. He loves the ambiance — the owners haven't changed the interior since the 1950s, keeping the old style of fluorescent lighting and countertop dining.

Somehow, it never gets old.

The clincher for Bryan: "You can get a cocoa puff to top it off, which are the best as well. I love it. I just love it."

Variety sates night owl

By the time Maile Meyers finishes work as a business associate in the cardiopulmonary office at Castle Medical Center, exercises and runs errands, she's tired and starving. And it's already 9 at night.

As a night owl who survives well on little sleep, Meyers knows what kind of places are good for relaxing.

"A lot of the places are open late, but they're really not that comfortable," she said. "I like the places where you can get a booth or you can go outside."

Luckily, Meyers has found restaurants she likes that stay open pretty late.

At Ryan's Grill in Ward Centre, her favorite is the Dungeness artichoke dip, and the tasty dessert sampler with Key-lime pie, coconut crème brûlée and chocolate-caramel ganache cake.

At Compadres, also at Ward Centre, she can kick back with nice martini and Mexican food.

And just the other week, Meyers discovered a new haunt:

Club Queen Bee on Queen Street in Kaka'ako. Once a hostess bar, it's now a hangout with drinks and food.

"I don't normally order steak and stuff," Meyers said, "but I had their steak, and it was really good."

Miki's is quick, casual

Kory Kawaguchi works as a waiter at the Hale Koa Hotel, but that's not what keeps him up at night. He goes out to see movies with friends or goes clubbing for a while. Sometimes they'll just cruise around in their cars.

Regardless of how the night begins, the night always ends at Miki's.

"It's usually the ending of the night," Kawaguchi said. "It's pretty much eat there, go home. There's a lot of good food."

Miki's is a diner in 'Aiea that caters specifically to the late-night crowd, opening from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m. — or until the food runs out.

It's an easy place for Kawaguchi to hang, because it's both inexpensive and casual. You just order through the window and sit at one of the two tables there.

If there's no room, people stand around outside and take the grinds back to their cars.

Kawaguchi and his friend usually get a plate of the popular teri-balls, meatballs covered in sweet teriyaki sauce. It's $3 for a mini plate and $4 for a regular plate.

"It's cheap," said Kawaguchi.
