HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Wainiha Bridge to be closed

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The Wainiha Bridge No. 2 will be closed from 6 p.m. today until 5 a.m. tomorrow, and again from 6 a.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday, while crews install an emergency replacement for the failing structure.

Crews plan to build a foundation for the new bridge tonight, and to install the new steel bridge above the existing bridge Thursday and Friday. The project had been scheduled for November, but was moved up when the bridge parts arrived on Kaua'i sooner than expected.

During the closures, a small boat will carry passengers across Wainiha River, and a shuttle van on the Ha'ena side will ferry residents and hotel guests. The state Department of Transportation recommends residents park their cars on the Hanalei side of the bridge.
