Ex-Dodger skipper Lasorda to address UH graduates

Hall of Fame baseball manager Tommy Lasorda, who inspired the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 2000 and led the Los Angeles Dodgers to two world championships, has been invited to deliver the commencement address at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, the school said.

Ex-Los Angeles Dodger skipper Tommy Lasorda says he's "looking forward" to speaking at UH-Manoa's graduation.

Ceremonies will be Dec. 19 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Lasorda was 1,599-1,439 in 20 seasons with the Dodgers, including four National League pennants and eight division titles. He is a senior vice president with the Dodgers, for whom he has worked in various capacities for 55 years.

Lasorda said his appearance was suggested by then-UH President Evan Dobelle last year when they met at a baseball game in Boston. "I told him I'd done five commencements and he said, 'my gosh, we'd love to have you come to Hawai'i,' " Lasorda said. "I found out he is no longer there, but they said they'd still love to have me and I'm looking forward to it."

Lasorda, who was a fan favorite managing against the Hawaii Islanders in the 1960s and '70s, has also addressed the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy and U.S. Naval Academy.

A UH spokesman said the school will cover Lasorda's transportation and expenses.
