Rainbows No. 3 in volleyball Top 25

The top-ranked University of Washington and No. 3 Hawai'i were the only women's volleyball teams in the USA Today/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll to remain undefeated after last weekend.
No. 7 Ohio State (19-1) lost its first match of the season to No. 21 Illinois on Saturday.
In the poll released yesterday, the top-ranked Huskies (17-0) received 63 first-place votes from the panel of coaches. Minnesota (20-2) remained second and the Rainbow Wahine (18-0) held on to No. 3 and got the two other first-place votes.
Nebraska (17-1) was fourth and Southern Cal (12-3) was fifth.
The Rainbow Wahine complete their Western Athletic Conference regular-season road schedule with matches against San Jose State tomorrow and Boise State on Friday.
Kahuku alum Peters honored by WAC
Former Kahuku High player Tuli Peters of Fresno State earned her first Western Athletic Conference volleyball Player of the Week honor yesterday.
Peters, a sophomore, averaged 3.67 kills and four digs a game in three-game victories over Louisiana Tech and SMU last week. The La'ie native also hit .305 overall.
Hale'iwa's Ching is MVP of San Jose
San Jose Earthquakes forward Brian Ching was named the team's Honda Most Valuable Player after leading the team in goals and into the Major League Soccer Western Conference semifinals.
The Hale'iwa native scored a league-leading 12 goals and tallied four assists to become the Quakes Budweiser Scoring Champion. Ching, 26, earned MLS Player of the Week honors for his two-goal effort July 17 against Colorado and was rewarded with his first selection to the MLS All-Star game.
The Earthquakes defeated the Kansas City Wizards, 2-0, on Saturday. The Quakes can advance to the Western Conference Championship with a win, tie or a loss of fewer than two goals in Game 2 of the series Oct. 30 in Kansas City.
Ex-'Bow Oda wins Waikoloa qualifying
Malino Oda, a former University of Hawai'i tennis player, defeated Jeremy Moitry, 6-3, 7-5, in the men's singles final of yesterday's Hilton Waikoloa Village Futures Qualifying Tournament.
Oda also advanced to the men's doubles semifinals with older brother Kula Oda, who is the men's and women's tennis coach at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo. Doubles weren't held yesterday because of rain.
Singles and doubles winners advance to the Hilton Waiko-loa Village $15,000 USTA Futures tournament Nov. 8 through 14.
UH-Hilo women seventh in Seaside
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo women's golf team is in seventh place after yesterday's first round of the Golf Mart/Lady Otter Invitational at Seaside, Calif.
Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo leads with a 316. Hawai'i-Hilo scored a 336.
The Vulcans' top golfer is Kiilani Matsuyoshi, who is tied for eighth after a six-over 79.
