Woman killed in Maui crash

A woman from Kihei, Maui, was killed last night when she was thrown from the pickup truck she was driving after the truck hit a dirt embankment about 11:10 p.m.

The truck flipped over and came to rest against the right shoulder of the southbound lanes of Piilani Highway, police said. They said Carter, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene of the crash. A front seat passenger, Gregory Owen Akers, of Kihei, who who was wearing a seatbelt, received minor injuries and was listed in good condition this morning at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Investigators have not yet determined whether speed, alcohol or drug use were factors in the crash.

Carter's death brings the traffic death toll for Maui County to 14 so far this year compared to 11 for the same period last year.
