Cho sets volleyball record at Redlands

 •  A friendship borne out of childhood soccer rivalry

University of Redlands (Calif.) senior setter Courtney Cho became the school's career assist leader last week.

Cho, a 2001 graduate of Kamehameha from 'Aiea, has 2,245 career assists, adding to her record in matches against Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier College last weekend.

The 2003 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second-team selection set the record Oct. 19, tallying 41 assists in a 3-0 win over Occidental. She has four volleyball matches remaining in her career.

The former mark was set by Christina Gray (2,168) and held since 1994.

Last season, Cho established the most assists in a season with 1,035.

I Fairfield (Conn.) freshman outside hitter Jazmin Pa'akaula (St. Joseph '04 of Hilo) garnered her fourth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week award, and second in a row, on Oct. 18.

The award is Pa'akaula's second back-to-back selection this season, as she previously earned the award Sept. 20 and 27.

She recorded 48 kills, with a .248 hitting percentage, six aces and 45 digs.



Football

• University of Washington sophomore defensive tackle Donny Mateaki (Iolani '02 of Honolulu) has suffered a season-ending injury, UW spokesperson Jim Daves said.

Mateaki injured a tendon in his foot against San Jose State Oct. 9, according to a story in the Oct. 16 Daily Herald.

The story said, "the injury at first was considered minor. He complained of discomfort this week, and examinations disclosed ligament damage."

The story also said Mateaki had surgery Oct. 14, and could miss spring practice.

• Occidental College junior linebacker Derek Turbin (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) led the team with 10 tackles and four pass deflections in a 42-28 win over Redlands Saturday as Occidental took sole possession of first place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Junior wide receiver Ric Fukushima (Moanalua '02 of Waipahu) had six receptions for 72 yards.

• Nevada sophomore wide receiver Caleb Spencer (Kamehameha '03 of Honolulu) had six catches for 112 yards in a 54-48 win over Tulsa Saturday.

• Whitworth (Spokane, Wash.) redshirt freshman running back Chris Ahsing (Campbell of 'Ewa Beach) rushed 12 times for 54 yards and a 5-yard touchdown in a 41-35 double overtime win over Menlo College (Atherton (Calif.) Saturday.

Menlo senior wide receiver Russ Fukushima (Moanalua '00 of Honolulu) caught a 10-yard TD pass for his only reception of the game.



Women's Soccer

• Pacific senior midfielder Kalei Titcomb (Kamehameha '01 of Kailua) assisted on the game-winning goal in double overtime as the Boxers beat Lewis & Clark, 3-2, Saturday.

Titcomb's assist came on a direct free kick from the right side of the field in the 106th minute.

Sophomore forward Stacey Sueoka (Kaua'i of Koloa) scored Pacific's second goal in the 50th minute, on a breakaway up the right side of the field, shooting the ball into the far corner.

• Pacific senior Joni Kaitoku (Iolani '01 of Mililani) assisted on Pacific's lone goal in a 4-1 loss to Pacific Lutheran Sunday.

• Idaho State sophomore Jennifer Loo (Mililani '03) helped the Bengals keep their playoff hopes alive by assisting on the lone goal against Sacramento State in a 1-0 win Thursday.

Loo also scored ISU's first goal in a comeback 2-1 victory over Portland State Saturday.

• Whitworth senior forward Jennifer Hall (Kaiser of Hawai'i Kai) scored her second goal of the season two minutes into the match, helping the Pirates end a three-match winless streak with a 3-0 win over Linfield, 3-0, Sunday.



Men's Golf

• Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) junior Zac Nadamoto (Iolani of Honolulu) shot 83-78—153 to help lead the Boxers to a second-place finish in team standings at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic Monday.

Linfield freshman Devan Aburamen (Waiakea of Hilo) shot 79-83—162 to help the Wildcats to a fifth-place finish.

Pacific Lutheran junior Kurt Inouye (Kaua'i of Kapa'a) shot 80-73—153 to help the Lutes finish sixth.

• Idaho junior Christian Akau (Kamehameha '02 of Waipahu) shot a team-low 73-71-73—217 and tied for 42nd at Stanford's Nelson Invitational tournament Sunday.
