UH golfers finish last despite closing strong

The University of Hawai'i women's golf team shot its tournament-best 306 in yesterday's final round of the Kent Youel Invitational at Kapolei Golf Course, but finished last in the 15-team field.

The Rainbow Wahine amassed a 54-hole total of 947.

UCLA closed with a 291 to finish with a 5-under 859 total and beat runner-up Arizona State by 19 strokes.

The Bruins also took the top three individual places as Amie Cochran claimed medalist honors with a 4-under 212 to edge teammates Susie Mathews (213) and Charlotte Mayorkas (214).

Hawai'i's Dale Gammie finished in a tie for 19th with 224.

Oregon State's Leah Whiting, the 2002 Hawai'i high school champion from Waiakea, shot 223 to tie for 14th.



SAILING

Rainbow Wahine sailors among top 10

University of Hawai'i freshman Tinja Anderson-Mitterling finished eighth and sophomore teammate Shandy Buckley placed ninth in a field of 16 at the ICSA/Vanguard North American Women's Singlehanded Championship last weekend at Wayzata, Minn.

Anderson-Mitterling totaled 137 points, just two points out of seventh. She finished nine of the 15 races in the top 10, placing as high as second in the second race.

Buckley finished 10 of the 15 races in the top 10 and scored 148 points.
