Seniors have options on renewing bus pass

By Mike Leidemann

Senior citizens who want to renew their annual bus passes will be able to do so by mail or in person, city officials announced yesterday.

The new procedures are designed to avoid the long lines that developed a year ago when bus passes with a photo were first issued to thousands of senior citizens across the island.

Most of the existing annual passes are set to expire in the next few months. City officials say all existing pass holders will be sent an application form and notified of the new procedures by mail before their passes expire.

Under the new system, senior citizens with existing picture passes will then have two options:

• They can fill out the new application and mail it back to the city with a check or money order for $30. A new sticker, good for one year, will be mailed back to the pass holder.

• They also can bring the application to any satellite city hall to purchase the new sticker in person with a cash-only payment of $30.

Those who do not receive an application in the mail by the first day of the month of expiration can obtain an application and purchase the new sticker at satellite city halls.

People who do not already have a pass have to apply for one in person at the TheBus Pass Office at 811 Middle St. Bus routes A, 1, 2, 13, 31 and 32 stop at the Middle Street office.

For more information about renewals, call 591-7600 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
