Wai'anae class set to plant taro

Taro buds are expected to be planted Monday by Wai'anae's Leeward Enhanced Classroom students, who have been working on Hawai'i's Plantation Village's taro patch restoration project at Waipahu Cultural Garden Park.

O'ahu correctional inmates and Clifford Wong, a Windward O'ahu taro farmer, have been clearing the weeds to restore the taro patch and fishpond, said Plantation Village executive director Floren Elman Singh.

The Leeward Enhanced Classroom will maintain the taro patch and use it for hands-on learning activities and general tours to promote awareness of native Hawaiian agricultural practices.

The Plantation Village also has scheduled its quarterly cleanup for Dec. 11 from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are needed to do landscaping work and cleaning the historic homes. Lunch will be provided for clean-up workers but they must RSVP by calling 677-0110. Volunteers are asked to bring gardening or cleaning supplies.

State to open pig-hunting

The state is opening a special pig-hunting season from Nov. 1 to Jan. 31, 2005 in the Makiki-Tantalus area across to Manoa Valley.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources said the pig-hunting season is being opened because of the recent damage caused by feral pigs to the Honolulu Mauka trail system and surrounding Honolulu Forest Reserve.

Hunting for feral pigs will be allowed by permit on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only, from sunrise to sunset. Hikers will be allowed on area trails, but they are advised to leave their pet dogs at home during control hours and not to interfere with hunting activities.
