Big Island police hunt fugitive, 23

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police are looking for a 23-year-old man who escaped from corrections officers as he was being taken to court Wednesday.

Kalani Kaohimaunu

Kalani Kaohimaunu allegedly ran away at about 12:50 p.m. as he was being moved from the Hawai'i Community Correctional Facility in Hilo to South Kohala District Court after being arrested on warrants for contempt of court and failure to appear for court hearings.

Kaohimaunu is 5 feet 10, about 160 pounds and has brown eyes and hair.

Woman, 80, dies after Hilo crash

HILO, Hawai'i — An 80-year-old Hilo woman died Wednesday from injuries suffered in a car crash on Kilauea Avenue in Hilo.

Police said Mieko Sakai was a passenger in a 1990 Toyota Corolla that was traveling south at about 11:11 a.m. when it ran off the road and hit a utility pole near West Ohea Street. The driver, Tomiko Yoshimura, 84, of Hilo, also was injured, but police did not have information on her condition yesterday.

Sakai was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she died at 4:50 p.m.

The death was Hawai'i County's 36th traffic fatality so far this year, compared with 29 a year ago.



Man flees after Kalihi robbery

Police were on the lookout for a man who robbed the Kamehameha Shopping Center branch of American Savings Bank about 2 p.m. Wednesday in Kalihi.

The robber entered the bank, handed a teller a demand note and walked out with an undisclosed amount of money, police said. He was last seen walking toward Longs Drugs.

The robber is estimated to be in his 20s, about 5 feet 7 and 150 pounds.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call detective James Nobriga directly at 692-4507. Anonymous calls may be made to CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.



Man suspected in car theft caught

Police responding to an argument call about 10 a.m. Wednesday on North Vineyard Boulevard arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of car theft and fraudulent use of a license plate.

When the officers arrived, they saw a man sitting next to a green Honda that had its motor running. A check of the license plate and vehicle identification number showed that the car and license plate had been reported stolen.

When officers approached the man he ran, but was captured after a brief foot chase and arrested.
