The Pac-Five boys water polo team picked up its biggest win in program history last night, but its celebration will be short-lived. There are other things to think about: practice.

Pac-Five defeated Punahou, 5-4, in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu tournament championship game at Iolani School, in front of several hundred screaming fans.

"It's unbelievable," Wolfpack senior co-captain Sean Aoyagi said. "We've been waiting six years to beat Punahou. We're celebrating our title, but we know starting at 12 o'clock tonight, we have to think about Tuesday.

"I don't know how I'm going to go to sleep tonight."

Pac-Five faces Punahou, the regular-season champion, in a playoff to determine the league's overall champion on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Iolani.

"Every practice we go into we need to be focused; we can't slack off," said senior co-captain Jason Fung said, who added that the team will practice today.

In its eight-year history, Pac-Five has won nine games, six this season. This season it posted its first wins over Iolani, and its first win in the ILH tournament — Tuesday's 8-4 semifinal victory over the Raiders. Last night's win was its first over Punahou, the winner of four straight league titles and 27 overall.

"This is the best feeling I've ever had," junior Harry Kersten said.

Pac-Five took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, on goals by Mike Fonseca and Kersten, but Punahou remained close on a goal by Geoffrey Long.

Adam Glickstein and Cody Edmunds scored with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter, giving the Wolfpack a 4-1 lead going into the half.

"I told them in the meeting, 'You guys can't come out flat in the first half, or you'll be down three or four goals,' " Pac-Five coach Shawn Williamson said. "They (pressed defensively) the whole half."

Said Fung: "I think maybe we just felt like we had it, but really, you don't have it until the end."

Pac-Five's Sean Aoyagi, left, and Punahou's Geoffrey Long battle for the ball during last night's championship game at the Iolani pool. The teams will meet Tuesday for the overall league championship.
In the first meeting between the teams, a 9-4 Punahou victory earlier this month, Pac-Five was leading 3-1 in the first quarter, and were even at 4-4 at halftime.

"Our guys had the confidence; we've been there before," Punahou coach Ken Smith said.

It appeared Punahou would make another comeback, led by Kaniela Lyman-Mersereau and Ikaika Aki, who each scored in the third quarter to make it 4-3.

"I knew we had it because usually we are a second-half team," said Wolfpack sophomore goalkeeper Beau Moody. "But when they got those two fast goals, I was a little scared."

In the fourth quarter, Pac-Five's Fung converted a penalty shot, and Punahou's Long scored again to make it 5-4 with more than three minutes remaining.

Smith, who saved his three timeouts for the fourth quarter, utilized them all, trying to "save the clock and use it in our favor. (We wanted to) move down and set up our offense," he said.

It worked, with the timeouts resulting in Long's goal, a shot that hit the goalpost, and a one man-up situation.

But Pac-Five regained possession with 39 seconds to play, and with a 35-second shot clock, the Wolfpack played possession ball and dumped it at Punahou's end with four seconds left to seal the victory.

"There's no doubt the better team won tonight," Smith said.

Third Place

Iolani 15, Kamehameha 5: Reed Ayabe scored five goals to lead the Raiders. Daniel Lim had four goals, Tai Sunnland two, and Charles Fasi, Chris Lau, Nate Anderson and Egen Atkinson one each.

Isaiah Guth scored twice for the Warriors, and Clifford Kapono, Cyrus Shultz and Ilia Reyes once apiece.
