The Mililani High School football team pitched a second-half shutout last night and rallied past Kailua, 41-21, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference quarterfinal action at Aloha Stadium.

The Trojans, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, ran off 27 unanswered points to improve to 9-0, and will face the winner of tonight's Castle-Kapolei game in next week's semifinals. Kailua's season ends at 4-5-1.

Last night's first half was played evenly, with Mililani tying it at 21-21 only after quarterback Maka Kahoano's 3-yard touchdown scramble with eight seconds remaining.

But the second half was all Trojans, as Mililani's defense held the Surfriders to 83 total yards. The Trojans, meanwhile, opened the second half with Jordan Apduhan's 41-yard kickoff return, followed by a five-play, 58-yard touchdown drive capped by Kekoa Perbera's 2-yard run.

Mililani then scored on Apduhan's 6-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter, and Kahoano added an 11-yard TD pass to Nick Rogers to go up 41-21 with 7:44 left in the game.

"In the first half, I think we had butterflies, nerves, but then we got ahold of ourselves at halftime," said Kahoano, who completed 14 of 22 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. "In the locker room we were just thinking, 'It's 0-0, we're starting all over.' We decided to just execute our plays and see what happens."

After Perbera's touchdown, Kailua drove 47 yards to the Trojans' 30, but came up a yard short on fourth-and-2. That was as far as the Surfriders would get until late in the fourth quarter.

Kailua's running back tandem of Damien Torres and Kekoa Su'a combined for 129 rushing yards in the first half, but was held to 28 yards on 10 carries after intermission.

"In the first half, we weren't sticking to our assignments," Mililani coach James Millwood said. "We were overpursuing and not doing our responsibilities, plus you can't arm-tackle those guys. We didn't change anything in the second half; we just did a better job."

On offense, the Trojans spread the wealth, using seven different ball carriers and throwing to five different receivers. Mililani even scored on a 40-yard halfback option pass from Perbera to Jon Santos in the first quarter.

Millwood said spreading the ball around "is how we keep everybody fresh," and Perbera added, "It's great to get everybody involved."

For the Surfriders, that made it difficult to key on any one person.

"Mililani is a very well-balanced team and they take what you give them," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "And they don't make turnovers, so we couldn't get that one big play we needed on defense. They're a good team."
