No. 5 Iolani rolls over Damien in ILH

Advertiser Staff

Quarterback Kiran Kepo'o passed for three touchdowns and running back Michael Hirokawa rushed for two scores to lead No. 5 Iolani over Damien, 49-7, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II football yesterday at Kozuki Stadium.

The Raiders (8-1 overall, 5-1 ILH) need to beat Punahou on Friday to force a playoff for the league title with the Division I champion, either Saint Louis or Kamehameha. If the Division II champion has an equal or better record than the Division I winner, a playoff determines the overall champion. Even if it wins the overall title, Iolani will play in the Division II state tournament.

After jumping to a 14-0 first-quarter lead, the Raiders broke open the game with a 28-point second quarter. Kepo'o had TD passes of 24 and 14 yards to Travis Nishioka and 26 yards to Micah Kalama, while Hirokawa scored on runs of 9 and 22 yards. Nishioka also scored on a 4-yard run.

Hirokawa led all rushers with 122 yards on 16 carries.

Kepo'o, who sat out last week's game while nursing an ankle sprain, did not play in the second half, when the running clock was in effect because of the 35-point differential mercy rule. He was 8 of 12 for 132 yards.

Iolani extended its lead to 49-0 on a Kyle Fooks 5-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Monarchs (3-5-1, 1-4-1) scored on a 31-yard run by Rein Ota with 2:11 left.

Linebacker Jon Takamura and defensive back Landon Patoc had interceptions for the Raiders.
