Seki fails to advance at PGA's Q-School

Punahou graduate Jim Seki closed with rounds of 76 and 73 to finish in a tie for 54th yesterday at the PGA Tour Qualifying School first stage tournament at San Juan Oaks in Hollister, Calif.

The top 23 advanced to the second stage. Seki, the 2002 Pac-10 champion in his junior year at Stanford, reached the second stage last year.

His score this year was 8-over-par 296. California's Matt Bettencourt was medalist, at 68-268. Casey Martin (70-275) took third. Northern California pro Kris Moe (71-286), the 2003 Hawai'i State Open champion, tied for 27th.



Taketa, Kaneko miss cut in assistant event

Hawai'i's Lance Taketa and Scotty Kaneko missed the 36-hole cut yesterday at the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship at the PGA Golf Club South Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Taketa, of the Big Island, shot 83—163, while Kaneko, of O'ahu, shot 80—160. The cutoff score was 150.

V.J. Trolio, of West Point, Miss., fired a 5-under 67 to take the 36-hole lead at 133.



UH to defend title in Turtle Bay tourney

The Rainbow Warriors will defend half a championship when they host the University of Hawai'i/Turtle Bay Intercollegiate Monday to Wednesday at the North Shore resort.

Hawai'i shared the title last year with South Carolina.

There are 19 teams in the tournament, including 16th-ranked UNLV and Oregon State.

Play begins off the first and 10th tees at 7:30 a.m. Monday (Palmer Course) and Tuesday (Fazio). Wednesday's 8 a.m. shotgun start will be at the Palmer Course.



UH women's season tickets going on sale

The University of Hawai'i 2004-05 women's basketball season tickets go on sale Monday.

Tickets will be available at the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office, by phone (944-2697), or online at www.EticketHawaii.com.

Season ticket prices are $75 for adults and $60 for seniors (age 65-older).



BYU-Hawai'i tops Santa Clara, 10-7

Sophomore Vlada Stankovic scored a match-high three goals as the 13th-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai'i men's water polo team beat Santa Clara, 10-7, in yesterday's opening match of the UC-Davis Aggie Shootout in Davis, Calif.



Aikau big-wave event sends out invitations

Some of the world's top big-wave riders, including defending champion Kelly Slater and former champion Clyde Aikau, have been invited to the Quiksilver in memory of Eddie Aikau, to be held at Waimea Bay on the North Shore.

The opening ceremony is Thursday, Dec. 2, and the holding period will be Dec. 3 through Feb. 28, 2005. The one-day event will be held only if surfable waves measure at least 20 feet.

The invitees are:
