Flooding prompts UH-Manoa to cancel classes Monday

Advertiser Staff

University of Hawai'i-Manoa officials today canceled classes for Monday because of severe flood damage sustained Saturday night.

A heavy rainstorm caused Manoa Stream to top its banks. Hamilton Library and the UH Biomedical Sciences building sustained serious flood damage, UH-Manoa spokesman Jim Manke said.

Thirty-five campus buildings are without power, Manke said, causing concern that scientific projects would be jeopardized by the loss of air conditioning. UH was bringing in generators and 2,000 pounds of dry ice today, he said.

No classes are scheduled for Tuesday because of the Election Day holiday.

UH has set up a hotline, 956-0001, which it will update every two hours or so as new information becomes available.

Noelani Elementary School in Manoa also sustained flood damage. It was already scheduled to be closed to students Monday for a teacher professional development activity, and will be closed for the Election Day holiday.
