U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye said yesterday he will stay in Washington through the election to be with his wife, Maggie, who has cancer in her large intestine.
Inouye, a Democrat, is running for his eighth Senate term.
"This will be the first time Maggie and I will not be in Hawai'i on Election Day since 1954, when I was first elected to public office as a member of the Territorial Legislature," he said in a statement. "However, I am certain that the people of Hawai'i agree that I need to be in Washington with Maggie during this period of concern."
The senator said the growth was found about a week ago during a routine physical examination. He said that his wife is scheduled to have surgery Thursday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and that doctors were optimistic.
