Likelike lanes to be closed

Motorists are being advised of lane closures along Likelike Highway tomorrow, and Wednesday through Friday.

The highway will be closed in the Kane'ohe-bound direction from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. for roadway reconstruction. One lane in the Honolulu-bound direction near the Wilson Tunnel will be closed from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. on those same days.

Also, one lane will be closed in both directions between Emmeline Place and the tunnels tomorrow, and Wednesday through Friday. The lane in the Honolulu-bound direction will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., while the lane in the Kane'ohe-bound direction will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be no lane closures on Tuesday in observance of Election Day.



Robber locks man in car trunk

A 26-year-old man was robbed and kidnapped early yesterday morning after leaving a restaurant on Kapi'olani Boulevard, police said.

The man was forced at gunpoint to drive to Makiki and then held in the trunk of his car for several hours while the suspect drove around.

The kidnapper pulled the 26-year-old from the trunk and was taking him to get more money when the victim jumped out, police said. The suspect drove off with the victim's car.



Trick-or-treat party tonight

The Hawai'i Kai Retirement Community invites area children to a "Safe House Trick or Treat" from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the center's assisted living section, 428 Kawaihae St.

Diabetes tests offered at event

A Diabetes Awareness Day will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Waikiki Community Center, 310 Paoakalani Ave.

The free event will include health screenings, testing and educational materials. For reservations, call 923-1802.



Food fest takes place Saturday

The fourth annual "Taste of Waipahu" to be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park, will feature nearly a dozen different ethnic food booths, entertainment, crafts and games.

The event is presented by the Waipahu Community Association.

Vendors include Cinnayums, Cocina Filipina, Jenny's Korean, La Familia, Lavern's Catering, Mom's Soul Food, Pizza Hut, Tanioka's, Thai Kitchen, Hawaiian Style Chili Company and 3-Star Restaurant.

The entertainment lineup: J. Yorong-Rondalla, Taiko group, Dances of Paradise, Waipahu Intermediate School band, Performing Artist Academy, Pedoy's School of Escrima, Way Back When, St. Joseph School choir, North Shore Martial Arts Defense Club, Fresh Impact, Sabrina Starr Dancers and Weed and Seed Band.

Three hospitalized after collision

A collision on Kamehameha Highway near Kahalu'u Friday night sent two men and a woman to the hospital, police said yesterday.

The crash occurred shortly after 11 p.m. about 358 feet south of Wailehua Road. A 22-year-old Hau'ula man driving north in a 1988 Toyota crossed into the southbound traffic lane and plowed into a 1990 Toyota driven by a 20-year-old woman. The woman and a male passenger, 20, are both from Kane'ohe.

The male driver was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The woman driver was taken to Queen's, and the male passenger was taken to Castle Medical Center. The condition of the latter two was unknown.



School to mark 125th birthday

WAIHE'E, Maui — Waihe'e School will celebrate its 125th anniversary from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with games, entertainment, food booths and more.

The school opened Sept. 18, 1879, with 100 pupils in the English Department and 20 in the Hawaiian Department. Today the school has 860 students in preschool through grade five.

Pictures and artifacts showcasing the school's history will be on display, and a country store will sell produce, plants, flowers, preserves, baked goods and pickled onions. A commemorative cookbook, T-shirts, and other souvenirs also will be sold.

Cruise industry to be discussed

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui County's Cruise Ship Task Force will hold community meetings over the next few weeks to gather comments on the cruise ship industry's growing presence in the Islands. The meetings will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Lahaina Intermediate School cafeteria and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Maui Waena School cafeteria in Kahului.

Mayor Alan Arakawa formed the task force a year ago to develop recommendations on how to minimize the negative impact of cruise ship visits, and take full advantage of potential benefits. For more information, call the Maui County Office of Economic Development at (808) 270-7710.
