Airport security contracts awarded

Two companies yesterday were awarded contracts to provide private security at the state's airports.
Securitas Security Services will handle security for the O'ahu and Big Island airport districts, while Wackenhut Corp. will provide security for Kaua'i and the Maui district, which includes Moloka'i and Lana'i.
Both companies, which have three-year minimum contracts with two one-year options, will begin their work in mid-October, the Department of Transportation said.
Current airport security contractors AKAL Security and Wackenhut will provide security until the new contractors are on board.
There will be no major changes to airport security procedures with the new contracts, the DOT said.
