Kaimuki coach suspended after arrest
Advertiser Staff
Kaimuki High has suspended varsity football coach Daniel Mafua for the remainder of this week, including Saturday's game at Kahuku, because he was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving early Saturday morning.
Athletic director Fred Lee said during the suspension, which went into effect after yesterday's practice, Mafua cannot attend practices or coach in the Kahuku game. Lee said the incident did not occur while Mafua was supervising players, but added that as a coach of students he is considered a "role model" thus the sanction.
Mafua will return to coaching Monday.
According to police, Mafua was stopped on the H-1 Freeway westbound near the Waikele exit at 4:15 a.m., and was released at 6:10 a.m. after posting $500 bail.
Mafua did not return messages left by The Advertiser.
Lee has not determined if one of Mafua's assistants will serve as acting head coach for the week.
Mafua is in his first season as a head varsity football coach. The Bulldogs have lost nonleague games to Mililani and Pac-Five.
The Kahuku game is Kaimuki's O'ahu Interscholastic Association East season opener.
