Malama o Manoa, the 3,500-strong community organization, is holding a 1,000-Tree Giveaway, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Manoa District Park Recreation Center Pavilion (Lowrey Avenue entrance, off of Ka'aipu Avenue).
The trees are free. Arborists and plant doctors will give free advice on healthy growing.
The philosophy behind this event is, "Give a gift to the earth, plant a tree." The organization is concerned that urban forests are diminishing day by day as more trees are cleared to make way for more asphalt and concrete.
Trees and seedlings to be given away include wiliwili, kukui nut, historic hau, kamani nut, jatropha, Samoan coconut, plumeria, papaya, mountain apple, banana, dwarf hau, milo, mango, jabong and monkeypod.
The mission of Malama o Manoa is to promote community, celebrate cultural diversity and heritage, and to promote, protect and enhance the special qualities of historic Manoa Valley. All Hawai'i residents are welcome to join. Information: www.malamaomanoa.org.
