ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
First Friday features the fine art of hair

Advertiser Staff

Tonight's First Friday Gallery Walk will take a fashionable turn when J Salon, 1128 Nu'uanu Ave., unveils a photo exhibit of its fall/winter collection for men and women. No more fried hair — the flat-iron craze is over, declares owner Joe Randazzo: "It's all about sensuous texture, movement, layers, waves and rich, rich color."

Photographer Karin Kovalsky shot local models in makeup from J Salon's signature line and clothing in neutral tones that complement the sensuous styles.

The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ann Taylor celebrates 50 years

This month marks the 50th anniversary of that bastion of modern American sportswear, Ann Taylor.

So, who was Ann Taylor? Actually, "she" was a dress. The father of Ann Taylor founder Richard Liebeskind Jr. jump-started his son's New Haven, Conn., retail venture by giving his son the rights to manufacture a 1954 shirtwaist dress, the Ann Taylor. The company will re-introduce the iconic dress in two colors this fall.

FINAL WORD

Fox executive Mike Darnell | after a judge turned away a Dreamworks request to block the boxing show "The Next Great Champ" (Dreamworks has its own boxing show, "The Contender"):

"Boxing is a very generic concept. Quite frankly, every producer and their mother had this idea. We got pitch after pitch after pitch, like everybody in town, from MGM, Paramount, Mike Tyson, Don King, Lennox Lewis."

Correction: The scarf pictured was created by Pegge Hopper and was not part of the exhibit.
