Former Hawai'i Olympians to speak

Advertiser Staff

Even though the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece has ended, an "Olympic torch" will burn brightly at the Hawai'i State Library on Thursday for Hawaiian Olympians: Legends of the Past.

The special program, which will feature former Olympians from different eras and sports, is sponsored by the Hawaiian Historical Society, Hawai'i State Library, and the Hawai'i Olympic Association. It will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.

A panel of speakers, which will be moderated by Advertiser sports writer Wes Nakama, include:

• William Smith, 1948 gold medal winner in swimming;

• Tommy Kono, 1952 and 1956 gold medal winner in weightlifting;

• Keala O'Sullivan Watson, 1968 bronze medal winner in diving;

• Chris Woo, 1976 U.S. swimming team member;

• Kevin Asano, 1988 silver medal winner in judo;

• Brian Viloria, 2000 U.S. boxing team member.

To request a sign language interpreter, call the library as soon as possible.

In conjunction with the Olympics program, two exhibits are on display at the library through Sept. 14:

• Award-winning Aukai to Aukai, photos of Hawai'i swimmers from the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden through the modern era.

• Olympic Memorabilia through the years from the collection of Jin DeSilva, manager of the Doris Duke Estate, and member of the 1948 Ceylon Olympic Team.

For more information, call the Hawai'i State Library's Art, Music and Recreation Section at 586-3520.
