By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference's first huge showdown lived up to expectations last night, as Campbell held off Kaiser, 28-21, before about 2,500 at Kaiser Stadium.

The Sabers (2-1 overall, 2-0 OIA White) took a 28-21 lead with 2:44 remaining on Jessie Lee's 5-yard touchdown run, and the Cougars (1-2, 1-1) lost the ball on downs in the ensuing series.

The two teams went back-and-forth throughout the the game, as neither ever led by more than seven points.

Campbell amassed 438 yards rushing, led by Kaneala Stanton (12 carries, 128 yards) and Isaiah Smith (12-127).

Kaiser, meanwhile, gained 241 yards through the air using two quarterbacks. Shannon Wise played quarterback in the first half and completed 7-of-11 passes for 146 yards and one touchdown. Steven Pratt took over in the second half and went 7 of 20 for 95 yards and one touchdown.

The Sabers marched 86 yards on 11 plays after the opening kickoff, only to fumble the ball away at Kaiser's 4-yard line.

Campbell went up 7-0 after Shaye Asoau's 1-yard quarterback sneak, but the Cougars answered with Wise's 67-yard touchdown pass to Matt Ching on the first play from scrimmage following the kickoff.

Kaiser took a 14-7 lead on Wise's 12-yard touchdown run on a naked bootleg, sprung free by Rusty Laboy's block on the seam.

Lee's 2-yard TD run helped Campbell tie it 14-14 just before halftime.

Quinton Richards' 4-yard touchdown run helped give the Sabers a 21-14 lead with 3:29 remaining in the third quarter.

The Cougars came back to tie it at 21-21 on Pratt's 11-yard touchdown pass to Steele Legros with 1:50 left in the quarter.
