Irons scores perfect 10, advances in Japan meet

Two-time world champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i scored a perfect 10 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Quiksilver Pro Japan yesterday.
The third and fourth rounds were run yesterday in 3- to 5-foot waves at Hebara, Japan.
Irons defeated Brazil's Armando Daltro in the third round, then California's Pat
O'Connell in the fourth round. Irons had a two-wave total of 17.17 in the victory over O'Connell, including a perfect 10.
Kalani Robb of O'ahu's North Shore beat Michael Lowe in the third round (10-6.66) and Trent Munro in the fourth round (13-9.23) and faces Florida's Kelly Slater in the quarterfinals.
Bruce Irons, Andy's younger brother, was eliminated in the third round. Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae was eliminated in the second round.
The contest is the sixth of 11 stops on the World Championship Tour. Irons is currently ranked No. 1. Slater is No. 2.

Chaminade splits two matches in California
Ti'Ara Epps had 24 kills to lead Cal State Los Angeles to a 31-29, 29-31, 27-30, 30-27, 26-24 victory over Chaminade in the Holiday Inn Select Diamond Bar Cal Poly Pomona Invitational yesterday at Pomona, Calif.
In an earlier match, Kahala Kabalis had 22 kills and Valasi Sepulona added 18 to lift Chaminade to a 30-23, 23-30, 27-30, 30-22, 15-9 victory over Seattle University.
Chaminade is 3-2.
In other matches involving Hawai'i teams:
Erin Gudmundson had a match-high 18 kills to lift third-ranked Nebraska-Kearney to a 30-26, 30-26 30-25 victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i in the Seasider Classic at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie. Nebraska-Kearney is 6-0.
In a later match, BYUH (4-2) defeated South Dakota State, 18-30, 30-26, 25-30, 30-22, 15-10.
The Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball team lost two five-game matches at the Rodeo City Invitational at Ellensburg, Wash.
The Vulcans are 3-4 overall, 0-3 in the tournament after losing Western Oregon, 30-19, 22-30, 26-30, 30-27, 20-18, and Northwest Nazarene, 30-26, 19-30, 30-28, 25-30, 15-8.

McLachlin one shot back in California
Hawai'i's Parker McLachlin bogeyed the final hole for a 1-under 71 yesterday and was one-stroke behind the leader heading into today's final round of the California State Open at Murrieta, Calif.
McLachlin, a Punahou School alum, is tied with Chez Reavie (70) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and John Lepak (72) of La Habra Heights, Calif., at 9-under 207 through 54 holes at the SCGA Golf Course.
Jason Gore, of Valencia, Calif, shot a 69 and leads at 206.
