Uniforms given to football teams

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Three Kapa'a Pop Warner Football Association teams have received new game uniforms to replace those destroyed in a fire four weeks ago.

The uniforms were donated by a Pop Warner Association in California, and they arrived in time for Saturday's Pop Warner Jamboree at Vidinha Stadium, the traditional opening of the Pop Warner season on Kaua'i. The players are ages 8 to 15.

The three teams lost everything from helmets to coaches whistles in a pre-dawn fire on Aug. 6. The loss was estimated at $34,500, and the equipment was not insured.

The fire, which was deliberately set, also destroyed a storage building owned by Kaua'i County and an adjoining lanai where the players did their homework before practice.

Since the fire, the Kapa'a Pop Warner Association has received $27,000 in cash donations. They also have received used equipment from a youth athletic association in West O'ahu.
