Advertiser Staff

John Barry, a former assistant men's soccer coach at the University of Richmond, has been selected the varsity boys soccer coach at Damien.

Barry, the son of former longtime Iolani coach Bob Barry, was a goalkeeper at Lafayette College (Pa.) and is looking to turn around a program that went 0-12 last season in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Barry is a 1994 graduate of Iolani, where he was an Advertiser all-state player in both soccer and football (as a place kicker) and National Soccer Coaches Association all-region player.

Girls Basketball

Byron Cheng has been named the girls varsity basketball coach at Mid-Pacific Institute. Joining Cheng's staff are former University of Hawai'i assistant Da Houl and Ben Flores who has coached at Kamehameha, Leilehua, and 'Aiea.

Cheng served for two years as an assistant coach for Vince Goo at the University of Hawai'i, and was head coach for varsity basketball teams at Punahou, Sacred Hearts, and most recently at Moanalua.
