BYUH cross country teams sweep season-opening event

Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept the opening event of the Hawai'i collegiate cross country season Saturday, taking the women's and men's divisions of the Chaminade Invitational at the BYUH campus.

Chelsea Smith, the defending NCAA Division II champion, led the Seasider women to victory. She finished the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 52 seconds to win by 1:27 over freshman teammate Diana Choi.

BYUH runners also finished fourth (Melanie Madsen), fifth (Jennifer Bingham) and seventh (Emily Williams) for a team score of 19.

The Seasider men, led by third-place finisher Jake Rushton and fourth-place finisher Jeremy Van Tress, posted a team score of 34. Other counting BYUH runners were Jacob Puzey (sixth), David Tamura (ninth) and Joshua Croft (12th).

Hawai'i Pacific's Matthew Stevens won the 8K race in 26:46.

Other schools participating in the meet were Hawai'i Pacific, Hawai'i-Hilo, Chaminade and the University of Hawai'i.



Lyau, Kusutani first to finish Ultra 20K

Jonathan Lyau won the men's open division and Sayuri Kusutani the women's open division in Sunday's Michelob Ultra Kalaeloa 20K at Barbers Point.

Lyau finished in 1 hour, 15 minutes, 9 seconds. Kusutani was timed in 1:17.18.
